A brief slowdown is different from a full disconnection. Check whether other devices lose service at the same time.

Speed tests create a short period of high traffic. They can expose problems that are not obvious during web browsing, video playback, or email use. The test itself usually reveals an existing weakness rather than causing a healthy broadband connection to fail.

Common Causes of a Dropped Speed Test

Wi-Fi Interference or Weak Signal

A weak Wi-Fi signal can lose packets when the test increases traffic. Distance from the router, thick walls, nearby networks, and electrical interference can make the wireless link unstable. The connection may appear normal at low usage but fail during a sustained download or upload.

Router Overload or Firmware Problems

An overloaded router may struggle with many connected devices, active downloads, VPN traffic, or outdated firmware. Some routers become unresponsive under high throughput and recover only after a restart. Excessive heat or a failing power adapter can produce similar symptoms.

Modem or ONT Faults

  3. Check the router and modem logs. Look for WAN link changes, loss of synchronization, DHCP errors, or repeated reboots around the test time.
  4. Run tests at different times. Failures limited to busy periods may indicate local or ISP congestion, while failures at all times suggest equipment or line problems.
  5. Observe the type of interruption. A Wi-Fi reconnect, router reboot, modem resynchronization, and DNS failure have different symptoms. Note which lights change and whether local network access remains available.

Ways to Prevent the Connection from Dropping

  • Run the test over Ethernet when possible to remove Wi-Fi variability.
  • Move close to the router and use the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band when the device and coverage support it.
  • Pause large downloads, cloud backups, streaming uploads, and VPN sessions during testing.
  • Restart the router and modem, then install stable firmware updates provided by the manufacturer.

  • Use several reputable speed test servers because a single server can have temporary load or routing issues.

Contact your ISP when wired devices lose service, the modem or ONT repeatedly loses synchronization, or the problem continues after testing another cable and device. Provide the approximate times, test results, connection type, modem status, and whether all devices were affected. This information helps the ISP distinguish equipment faults from line noise, congestion, or an access network outage.

Do not rely on one failed test to judge your broadband plan. A repeatable pattern across wired devices, multiple servers, and different times is stronger evidence of a connection problem than a single interrupted session.
